Pool Trends

An infinity edge pool (also named negative edge, zero edge, infinity pool, disappearing edge, or vanishing edge pool) is a swimming or reflecting pool that produces a visual effect of water extending to the horizon, vanishing, or extending to "infinity." The term also is used to describe perimeter overflow pools (pools that may be on level parcels, wherein the water flows over one or more edges, usually flush with the decking elevation). One type of location in which the effect is particularly impressive is where the infinity edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky.

The infinity pool design concept is said to have originated in France, where one of the first vanishing edge designs was utilized in the "Stag Fountain" at the Palace of Versailles in the early 1600s. We are happy to report that you no longer need to own a palace to own an infinity pool, as the cost and complexity of these pools has evolved to the point where it is a modest premium to enjoy this luxury resort feature.

The latest trend is to dispense with the traditional pool coping and have the water at the same level as the decking.

Many of our clients are bringing their pools closer to their homes so that they may enjoy the water experience from their interior living areas.
We will talk more about some other recent trends in pool technology, including LED lighting, waterfalls, and the latest in eco-features in an upcoming pools segment.

If you have young children, consider integrating a “shelf” into your pool design. This allows for a shallow area in the pool, that can be warmed by the sun, to be enjoyed by toddlers and adults alike.
